Soldier Bar is a tiny, rustic dive bar on Ratchaphakhinai Road in the north-east corner of the Old City. It's run by a retired Thai army officer. Beer is cheap, the soundtrack is rock and metal, and the décor is as rough-and-ready as you'd hope. It comes up on local forums whenever someone asks for a quiet bar in the Old City. Go for a cold beer and a chat rather than cocktails.
