About
Mae Kampong is a small hill village in Mae On, about 50 km east of the city at roughly 1,300 m, and one of Thailand's best-known community tourism projects. About 370 people live here, traditionally growing tea, coffee and rice, and the village runs its own cooperative homestays, simple family homes with shared bathrooms. Most visitors come to walk the wooden village lanes, learn about miang (fermented tea leaves), drink highland coffee and walk out to the seven-tiered Mae Kampong Waterfall about a kilometre away. You can do it as a day trip, but staying a night is the way to see it quiet.
